The reliability and quality of global fertiliser supply are facing unprecedented challenges, according to analysis by Business Insider Africa. While attention has often focused on price per tonne or shipping lane closures, the more critical and enduring impact lies in the degradation of supply chain integrity and the subsequent erosion of product quality when systems are under stress.

Historically viewed as a low-value, high-volume commodity, fertiliser's status has evolved following disruptions in key maritime routes, such as the Red Sea and the Strait of Hormuz. These bottlenecks have led to significant price increases, with urea exceeding $800/tonne FOB Egypt, and force majeure declarations. Reduced output from major producers due to constrained gas supplies, for instance, has demonstrated the fertiliser system's limited buffer capacity, a consequence of aggressive optimisation for cost efficiency. Approximately one-third of all traded fertilisers transit the Strait of Hormuz, highlighting its strategic importance.

Unlike many commodities, fertiliser cannot be easily substituted or delayed without severe repercussions for crop yields and soil health. Inadequate application timing or the use of lower-grade products can lead to cumulative damage over multiple harvests, resulting in decreased food production, declining nutritional density, and long-term soil deterioration. This systemic fragility means that the full impact of supply disruption lags behind initial price spikes, making the damage less immediately visible but more profound.

This environment has also created opportunities for less regulated market participants. When supply is tight, buyers may be compelled to accept substandard or incorrectly blended products. This dynamic disadvantages compliant producers, who incur costs to meet environmental, safety, and quality standards, making them less competitive against opportunistic suppliers. A report from Business Insider Africa indicated that Alkagesta's analysis, suggests this could lead to the filtration of high-integrity suppliers, with negative consequences for the food system.

While policy responses are emerging, with nations like the US, Brazil, and the EU exploring supply diversification and re-evaluating domestic production, mere acknowledgement is insufficient. The goal must be quality-assured supply from legitimate multiple sources, not just an expanded roster. The situation mirrors the reclassification of oil as a strategic asset post-1970s, requiring sustained political will and capital reallocation to ensure resilience. Kenya's 2024 and 2026 incidents of substandard fertiliser distribution via subsidy programmes, where independent investigations uncovered systemic failures, underscore the real-world implications of compromised supply chains, aligning with broader African Union and FAO data suggesting significant percentages of substandard agrochemicals in some African markets.
