Global seaborne coal loadings experienced a modest increase of 1.7% year-on-year, reaching 866.8 million tonnes (excluding cabotage) between January and August 2026, according to analysis from shipbroker Banchero Costa.
This data, derived from vessel tracking by AXS Marine, highlights a mixed landscape for the dry bulk shipping sector. While global volumes showed slight growth, specific regional trends indicate divergence.
Notably, India's overall coal import volumes have diminished during the aforementioned period in 2026. This decline occurs even as the country has increased its intake of Russian coal, suggesting a shift in sourcing or a reduction in total demand from other origins.
The findings were reported by Hellenic Shipping News Worldwide, citing Banchero Costa's weekly market intelligence.
