Bio-bunker sales at the Port of Rotterdam contracted by 38% in the third quarter of 2026 compared with the previous three-month period, according to figures reported by Hellenic Shipping News Worldwide.
The decline was led by a sharp downturn in bio-blended very low sulphur fuel oil (bio-VLSFO), where off-take dropped by 81,000 metric tonnes quarter-on-quarter to 63,000 mt. Demand for bio-blended high sulphur fuel oil (bio-HSFO) also recorded a significant retreat, sliding by 17,000 mt to reach 13,000 mt in the third quarter.
Distillate biofuel demand softened more moderately. Total sales of bio-marine gasoil (bio-MGO) fell by 2,000 mt between the second and third quarters to 41,000 mt. Conversely, bio-blended ultra-low sulphur fuel oil (bio-ULSFO) volumes held broadly flat across the period at 22,000 mt.
While sales of conventional bunker fuel alternatives softened, the port recorded growth in bio-methanol bunker volumes during the period.
