  1. 1. Norway Funds Testing Programme for Nuclear-Powered Shipping

    Source: Ship & BunkerDate:

Norway’s Research Council has allocated NOK20 million, approximately $2 million, to a marine nuclear propulsion pilot led by Emerald Nuclear Norway. The programme will examine how a five-megawatt microreactor can operate alongside vessel power, storage and control systems. A test facility near Aalesund is planned for 2027, initially using electrical heating rather than nuclear fuel. Island Offshore is targeting a first vessel installation in 2031–32. For shipowners and equipment suppliers, the development represents an early-stage investigation of an alternative propulsion pathway, rather than evidence that nuclear-powered commercial operations are imminent.

  2. 2. Monjasa Reorganises Trading Leadership Across Asia and West Africa

    Source: Manifold TimesDate:

Monjasa has appointed Simone Piredda as its Singapore Trading Director while Morten Jacobsen relocates to Houston to pursue responsibilities in the group’s offshore and support-services operations. Jacobsen helped establish the Singapore business in 2010; according to Monjasa, its Asian operations now supply approximately 1.5 million tonnes of marine fuel annually. Piredda transfers from Dubai after eight years working on West African trading and supply. James Watkins will lead those activities as Dubai Trading Manager. The changes affect regional commercial oversight and customer relationships across three important maritime fuel markets, without indicating a withdrawal from Asia.

  3. 3. Shanghai Launches Programme to Standardise Methanol Bunkering

    Source: Manifold TimesDate:

Shanghai Chimbusco Marine Bunker has begun a two-year pilot intended to establish consistent procedures for supplying methanol to ships, with completion scheduled for the end of 2028. Supported by Shanghai Academy of Quality Management, the initiative covers workforce requirements, equipment, materials and operating conditions throughout the bunkering process. Implementation began with a launch meeting and technical training on 20 October. For vessel operators, suppliers and port authorities, the project addresses the operational consistency needed as methanol use expands. Its proposed standards could support wider adoption, although the framework remains under development rather than already in force.

  4. 4. Japanese Consortium Plans Integrated Ammonia Fuel Network

    Source: Manifold TimesDate:

Seven Japanese companies have agreed to develop an ammonia marine-fuel supply chain centred on the Chubu region, alongside four ammonia-powered car carriers. JERA will arrange renewable-energy-based ammonia procurement and loading infrastructure at Hekinan, while a dedicated bunkering vessel and the car carriers are scheduled for completion in 2030. NYK and K LINE plan an equally owned fuel-sales venture. The project links fuel availability with vessel investment, addressing a central obstacle to alternative-fuel adoption. For automotive exporters, shipbuilders and fuel providers, it establishes a coordinated development pathway, although deployment and resulting emissions reductions remain prospective.

  5. 5. Korean Maritime Agencies Link Vessel Trials With Remote Monitoring

    Source: Manifold TimesDate:

The Korea Research Institute of Ships and Ocean Engineering and the Korea Maritime Transportation Safety Authority have signed an agreement to combine vessel-testing capabilities with shore-based remote monitoring. Their cooperation includes sharing results from the alternative-fuel demonstration vessel K-GTB, developing reference models for coastal fleet transition and exchanging information on accident response and buoyancy-support technologies. The partners intend to make trial data available in real time to domestic shipyards, equipment manufacturers and researchers. For industry stakeholders, the arrangement could improve access to operational evidence when assessing new technologies, but it does not establish commercial readiness or verified emissions savings.
