Alkagesta, a Malta-headquartered global energy and commodity trading firm, has promoted Darren Axisa to the position of Country Manager for Malta. This appointment follows his tenure as Operations Manager within the company and signals Alkagesta's expanding operational footprint on the island, aiming to bolster Malta's significance as a strategic Mediterranean platform for energy storage, logistics, and international trading flows, as reported by MaltaToday.
Mr. Axisa brings almost two decades of experience across Malta's maritime, inspection, and energy sectors. His career began in 2007 at Saybolt as a surveyor. He then spent over thirteen years at Bureau Veritas, from 2009 until May 2023, where he advanced through coordination and management roles, engaging with traders, oil majors, terminals, and service providers. He subsequently joined Alkagesta in June 2023.
Speaking on his appointment, Mr. Axisa highlighted his commitment as a Maltese professional to contribute to the growth of a locally headquartered company. He expressed his intention to further develop Alkagesta's presence in the global commodity trading sector and support Malta's evolution into an international hub for logistics, energy flows, and maritime activity.
Since its establishment in 2018, Alkagesta has expanded its storage capacity to nearly 300,000 cubic metres across Evos Malta and Enemalta. The company's activities include local supply, quality correction, logistics optimisation, and positioning Malta as a Mediterranean trading hub for utility supply, bunkering, feedstock deliveries, and arbitrage flows across Europe, North Africa, and East of Suez. Alkagesta was also an early adopter in the Mediterranean for 0.1% sulphur fuel oil following the 2025 introduction of the Mediterranean Emission Control Area.
Alkagesta's total trading volumes increased from approximately 5.2 million metric tonnes in 2023 to over 8.7 million metric tonnes in 2025, with Group revenues rising from around USD 3.1 billion to approximately USD 4.7 billion in the same period. In 2025 alone, the company invested roughly EUR 50 million in Malta through direct operational and business-related activities. Mr. Axisa's promotion aligns with Alkagesta's strategy to deepen its operational presence in Malta and expand into ESG-linked projects, capital market activities, and career development within trading, risk management, compliance, and maritime logistics.
