The Maltese trading house, which broadened its operations into jet fuel supply earlier this year, has incorporated the EU ETS into its carbon market services. This expansion also anticipates the inclusion of ETS2 when the scheme extends to fuel supplies in 2028, aligning with the company's strategic growth objectives.

Currently, the EU ETS mandates that power stations, industrial facilities, and maritime, shipping, and aviation entities surrender allowances commensurate with their verified emissions from the preceding year. By 2028, ETS2 will broaden this requirement to encompass fuel suppliers, who will be held responsible for emissions from fuels used in sectors such as road transport and buildings.

Alkagesta's decision to enter this market was influenced by the scheme's wider applicability beyond the European Union, affecting any organisation operating within or dealing with the territory. This global reach complements Alkagesta's worldwide trading activities, which span various commodities including biofuels, Brent crude, naphtha, fertilisers, and jet fuel, from operational hubs in locations such as Malta, Singapore, Turkey, and Romania.

The timing of this move coincides with increased scrutiny regarding the effectiveness of the ETS. Discussions surrounding the future direction of the scheme, particularly with the upcoming ETS2, are occurring amidst broader concerns regarding European industrial competitiveness and rising energy costs. This renewed attention on the scheme was identified by Alkagesta as an opportune moment for market entry.

Anthony Guida, Biofuels Trading Desk Lead at Alkagesta, stated that offering EU ETS allowances alongside their CORSIA-eligible SAF and biofuels business will enable the company to assist clients with a broader range of carbon obligations from a single point of contact. He noted that as ETS2 includes smaller businesses and RefuelEU blending requirements escalate, having a unified trading partner for allowances, credits, and physical fuel supply is becoming increasingly valuable, a role they are well-positioned to fulfil.
