The United States continues to be Canada's principal energy trading partner, absorbing the majority of its oil and gas output. Historically, around 80% of Canada's crude production, following domestic refining requirements, is destined for export, with approximately 90% of these exports directed to the US market. This trade is facilitated by an integrated oil infrastructure developed over more than seven decades.
In 2024, Canadian exports of crude oil, Natural Gas Liquids (NGLs), and natural gas collectively reached a value of $160 billion. During this period, Canadian crude oil constituted over 60% of total US crude imports.
Further demonstrating this trend, Canada exported a record 4.3 million barrels per day (bpd) of crude in 2025. This information was reported by OilPrice.com.
